Welcome to your newsletter for week ending May 22nd
We've ended the week and the half term with glorious sunshine which we hope continues over next week's break! The children have enjoyed being outside and making the most of the playground markings, woodland area and the MUGA. You will have noticed that the climbing frame has been closed again- this is hugely disappointing after the long wait for it to be completed. The surface has not worked as intended and we are talking to the installer about getting this sorted next week.
As we look ahead to the last half term of the year, we are almost sorted with staffing plans for September. We will be sharing information about your children's new teachers and TAs at the end of the first week back. We will also be giving you information about the transition plans, where children get to spend time in their new classrooms with their new staff. These are planned for all day on July 1st and the morning of July 2nd. We know some children need extra support during this time- we have lots on our radar already but if you think your child needs additional preparation, please let us know by contacting the pastoral team via pastoral@bournvillevillageprimary.org.uk
One change to staffing that we can tell you about this week is that we will will be having a new SENDCo in September; Mrs May will be moving on at the end of July and our new SENDCo Miss Prottey begins in September. Bethany will be working with Mrs May over the next half term to ensure there is a positive handover and that there are no disruptions to SEND processes in school. Mrs Walker-Bailey will still be working as our SEND Admin Assistant- if you have any queries regarding the transition over to our new SENDCo you can contact her on kawalkerbailey@bournvillevillageprimary.org.uk or Mrs May via the usual email address.
Introducing Miss Prottey...
Hi everyone. I’m Miss Prottey and I’m delighted to announce that I will be SENDCo at Bournville Village Primary School from September.
As a teacher since 2014 working in mainstream, hospital and special needs schools I feel very well placed to help your child with any special educational needs they may have. My motto has always been to ensure all children can “be the best they can be” and for that reason I’m excited to join the team at BVP and continue the great progress they’re making.
In the coming months, I will be working closely with Ms May to gain a good understanding of the children. Please look out for me at upcoming events and introduce yourself so we can begin our partnership to support your child’s needs.

Chicken Pox Advice
We have been informed that a number of children have, or are suspected to have, chickenpox.
We have been in contact with the West Midlands Health Protection Team to seek advice and ensure we are doing all we can to help prevent further cases. Chickenpox is usually a mild illness and most children recover well at home; however, children with chickenpox should remain away from school until all spots have formed a scab, which is usually around five days after the spots first appear.
Some individuals are at greater risk of serious complications if they catch chickenpox, including pregnant women, newborn babies, and people with weakened immune systems, and they should seek medical advice if they come into contact with someone with suspected chickenpox or develop symptoms themselves.
Parents and carers should also be aware that children who have recently had chickenpox may develop complications if they also catch scarlet fever (group A streptococcal infection).
Please remain vigilant for symptoms such as a persistent high temperature, redness, heat or pain around chickenpox blisters, joint pain and swelling, or symptoms that are not improving or are getting worse.
If you are concerned, please seek medical advice promptly. Further information can be found on the NHS website for chickenpox and scarlet fever. As always, please do not hesitate to get in touch via the school email address if you have any questions or concerns.
Stay and Learns
National Numeracy Day (20/05/26)
On Wednesday, children across the school took part in some fun and engaging maths activities as part of National Numeracy Day.
Some of my favourite things I saw around school included very enthusiastic partitioning work in 2T; children in 1C attempting to measure the length of the classroom using cubes; some fabulous maths-based board games in 5C; and a creative exercise in 3BW that involved the children designing their own playgrounds with a limited budget and spending it carefully.
See the photos for some amazing park designs and lots of maths, counting and adding up different amounts of money!
Chess Club Cancelled
Please note that we have made the decision to discontinue Chess Club after next week. Families have already been contacted and advised to make alternative arrangements for next term.
Autumn 26 Music Lessons
It is that time of year again – if your child is now in year 2, you should have received an email earlier this week asking whether you would like your child to start music lessons in September. Please make sure you respond by Monday 22nd June if you would like to apply for these.
If your child is currently in years 3-5, you will receive communications within the next few weeks asking whether they want to continue or cancel their music lessons.

Well done to all of you for following this very important article. Thank you also to Pippa H, Maisey P, Lil M and Eloise N for helping Mrs Cooper and Mr Hall to present these certificates.
Later in the day, a group of children on our Rights Respecting Schools group (Aadam R, Olivia S-P, Grace G and Koulaba D) decided on the next Article they would like the whole school to focus on throughout the month of June. This is as follows:
Article 2 states that “All children have these rights, no matter who they are, where they live, what their parents do, what language they speak, what their religion is, whether they are a boy or a girl, what their culture is, whether they have a disability, whether they are rich or poor. No child should be treated unfairly on any basis.
After half term we will be on WEEK 3 of the menu.
You can pre-book meals in advance on Arbor till the end of the academic year (Arbor>> Meals>> Meal Choices Available>> Select Meal Choice)
Reminder: Even if your child is a packed Lunch, parents will need to book that lunch option on Arbor!
FSM Checker
As we approach the end of the school year, now is a great time for our families to check if their child is entitled to the free school meals scheme. We encourage all families to keep us updated on any changes to their circumstances, as eligibility for free school meals can provide valuable support both at home and in school.
If you are unsure whether your child (years 3-6) is entitled to a free school meal, please speak to one of the office team who can check for you. You will need to bring your national insurance number, full name and date of birth with you.
Alternatively, you can apply from home using this link: FSM Eligibility Checker

Volunteer needed
As with previous years, we will be recording the Year 6 production.
We have a parent that has all the kit to record the production, but not the software to edit and master the recording. If there is a member of the BVPS family that can help in this area (your child doesn’t need to be in Year 6) then we would love to hear from you! We will pass on the recordings (audio and visual) for you to work on, with final approval from Mrs Cooper. Fingers crossed we have someone in the community that can help.
Send an email to: pta@bournvillevillageprimary.org.uk or text Becki on 07964166963 if you are keen and able to get involved.
And finally...
Well done PTA and the Play Leaders for their fun, games and ice-creams on the playground at the end of the day today- it was a gloriously sunny afternoon and the music and activities hopefully lifted spirits, ready for the week ahead. We appreciate that lots of you will be working- if that is the case we do hope that at some point you get to enjoy a bit of the sunnier weather with your children and families. If you're out and about or travelling, have safe journeys and enjoy!
If there is anything we can do to help over the week, as usual, do not hesitate to get in touch with Mrs Cooper via head@bournvillevillageprimary.org.uk
Take care all and see you on Monday June 1st!
Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children is the responsibility of everyone in our school and at all times we consider what is in our children’s best interests. We work to ensure our children are safe and cared for and by doing this we are protecting their health and development and preventing them from harm. If we are worried, we will raise concerns, share information, and take prompt action with the aim of ensuring families receive the right help at the right time.
