What does Personal Development look like at BVP?

At Bournville Village Primary School, our curriculum extends far beyond academic achievement. Through our Personal Development Curriculum, we provide rich opportunities for every child to grow, thrive and develop as confident, capable and compassionate individuals.

We believe that a high-quality education prepares children not only for their next stage of learning, but also for life beyond the classroom. Throughout their time at BVP, pupils develop the knowledge, skills and character needed to make informed decisions, build resilience and become active, responsible members of society. We explicitly teach the positive behaviours and values that underpin success in school, at home and within the wider community, delivering these experiences through a carefully planned programme of curriculum enrichment and extra-curricular opportunities.

Children at BVP understand that they and others posses inalienable rights, recognise their place in the world and the positive contribution they can make to it. They develop a strong sense of self, whilst valuing and respecting the views, experiences and identities of others. They learn that every voice matters and that diversity strengthens our communities. As they move through the school, pupils embody our core values of Challenge, Collaboration, Compassion, Integrity, Respect and Responsibility, developing the moral foundations and social awareness needed to flourish in modern Britain and beyond.

Our bespoke curriculum encourages children to embrace new experiences, take risks in their learning and view mistakes as opportunities for growth. We nurture resilient, hardworking and ambitious learners who are willing to challenge themselves and persevere when faced with difficulty. Pupils learn how to communicate thoughtfully and respectfully, celebrate the ideas and achievements of others, and engage in meaningful discussion. They develop the confidence to express their own views, question their thinking and that of others, and approach the world with curiosity, empathy and an open mind.

By the time they leave Bournville Village Primary School, our children are equipped not only with the knowledge and skills to succeed academically, but with the confidence, character and values to make a positive contribution wherever life takes them. They leave us as kind, resilient and responsible young people, ready to embrace the opportunities and challenges of the future.

Bourn2Be

Each half term, the children will take part in enrichment activities as part of the Personal Development Curriculum. These activities will be linked to a particular school value, a British value, Rights Respecting Schools articles and aspects of SMSC (Social, Moral, Spiritual and Cultural).

We know that all children are born to be special, but at our school they are 'Bourn2Be' something greater. Each Bourn2Be area has a common theme that informs the type of enrichment activities that are on offer. They are:

  • Bourn2Be Well (Autumn 1) - How can we develop strategies to support our mental health and wellbeing?
  • Bourn2Be Kind (Autumn 2) - How can we give back to our community?
  • Bourn2Be Respectful (Spring 1) - How can we celebrate diversity and promote respect?
  • Bourn2Be Proud (Spring 2) - How can we make Bournville an even better place to live?
  • Bourn2Be Green (Summer 1) - How can we protect our planet?
  • Bourn2Be Ready (Summer 2) - How can we prepare for our next steps?

BVP Family Groups

Our BVP school vision states that: 'All our children belong to a warm and welcoming school family that nurtures, supports and celebrates them as individuals, inspiring them to thrive in their learning and lives.' This aspect of a school family is something that makes BVP feel like such a unique and special school. To reflect this, we wanted the children to have more opportunities to get to know different members of their school family outside of their class and year group. From September 2026, each child will be allocated to a 'School Family' containing a mixture of children from Reception up to Y6, along with a Teacher, Teaching Assistant or member of SLT. Once per half term, the children will meet together for a morning or an afternoon with their School Family to take part in a special enrichment activity. We hope this will build a sense of community and cohesion across the school, as all our children, from our youngest to our oldest, will experience the feeling of belonging to something bigger.

Example - Y2 Personal Development Curriculum Overview

Please note that the above image is still in the draft phase, and may not include all activities planned for the year. Some details may change before or during next year as we roll out our Personal Development Curriculum.

For a child in Y2, they will begin the year with the Bourn2Be Well area. In assembly, they will learn about the school value of integrity and British value of mutual respect. In class they will read some poems from 'An Emotional Menagerie' alongside their regular texts. During the Autumn 1 term, all children will have the opportunity to participate in the school talent show, some outdoor art sessions linked to changing feelings through the seasons, ukulele lessons and Campfire reading (which will now move to an in-school activity to enable all pupils to participate). The first BVP Family Group activity of the year will be all about welcoming our new Reception children.

In Autumn 2, the Bourn2Be Kind area will focus on learning about the work of a particular charity. For Y2, this will be the WWF. The children will design posters to promote a fundraising activity of their choice.

In Spring 1, for the Bourn2Be Respectful area, the children will experience our Celebrating Cultures Day. Each year group will also be able to visit a place of worship; for Y2, this will be a mosque. Children across the school will take part in workshops and activities to promote Safer Internet Day.

In Spring 2, the Bourn2Be Proud area will focus on the wider Bournville community. For Y2, through the text, 'The Big Book of the UK', the children will learn about the unique history and geography of our country, and through assemblies will explore the school value of collaboration and British value of the Rule of Law. To give back to our local community, the children will take part in a litter pick in the park or on the green.

In Summer 1, the children will take part in activities linked to promoting our environment in the Bourn2Be Green area. The BVP Family Group activity will involve using recycled materials for junk modelling. The Y2 children will make a wormery or bug habitat linked to their English texts, as well as learning how to look after our school guinea pigs.

In Summer 2, the children will show how they have grown over the previous year in the Bourn2Be Ready area. Jobs June (changed from Jobs January) will allow the children to see what the world of work looks like from parent volunteers. Pupil leadership group elections, such as school council and RRS ambassadors, will take place. All children will be able to participate in sports day, and our Y2 students will be able to perform in the ukulele concert.

Have Your Say

We are very excited to be introducing our new Personal Development Curriculum for the 26/27 academic year. But we also know that it is not the finished product yet! If you have any suggestions for what else we can do to improve your child's experience at school, whether it is an enrichment activity, celebration or cultural opportunity, please get in touch with Mr Hall:

Likewise, please look out for regular feedback opportunities in the Parent Survey, and keep an eye on the newsletter for updates on what the children have been doing.
