Welcome to your newsletter for week ending May 15th

There's plenty going on around school next week and into the last half term of the year(!) so do keep your eye out on the website calendar here.

No waffle from Mrs Cooper today- just get straight into looking below for some of what's been happening this week and what's coming up!

Attendance Armadillo

This week, the attendance armadillos were handed to...

SATs Celebrations

To celebrate the end of SATs week and recognise all the hard work and dedication shown by our Year 6 pupils, the children enjoyed a range of special treats today.

School organised a picnic lunch of pizza and chips, followed by a visit from the ice cream van. The children also enjoyed a silent disco, badge making and football activities throughout the day.

We hope they had a fantastic time and enjoyed this well-deserved celebration after all their efforts.

Hungry Caterpillars

As a lot of you will have noticed the boundary hedge has been looking poor lately, the box hedge has a large infestation of Box Moth caterpillars.

We have met with Bournville landscapes this week to discuss the issue and find a solution to save the hedge. The two options available are treat the hedge with an insecticide which is only harmful to the caterpillars or replace a very large section of the hedge.

We are very keen to try and save the well-established hedge and keep the privacy it gives our school and the pupils while having lessons on the grassed area. We have agreed the best approach would be to treat the hedge with a bio-friendly insecticide that is safe to children and other wildlife. The treatment will be carried out over the half-term break.

We really do hope this does the trick!

BVP Superstar Fundraisers

GB and EB would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who sponsored them for the Birmingham Mini Run on 2nd May.

The girls took part to raise money for the Child Brain Injury Trust, a charity that supports children and young people affected by acquired brain injuries through vital information, support and training for families, schools and other organisations.

Thanks to the generosity of sponsors, they raised an amazing £540 for this fantastic cause!

BVP is incredibly proud of both girls for their wonderful achievement and efforts in supporting such important work.

Maths news

On Wednesday 20th May, we will be celebrating National Numeracy Day! The children will be taking part in lots of fun numeracy themed activities, live lessons and sessions involving Numbots and TT Rock Stars. The theme of this year's event is the 'Big Number Natter', which is designed to get children, parents and families talking about number. See what numbers you can find in the world around you - at home, on the way to school, or even out and about!

A reminder that on Monday 18th May, there will be a Y4 MTC workshop in George Hall from 3:30-4:30. All Y4 parents and children are welcome to attend, following on from your Stay and Learn session in the afternoon.

Autumn 26 Music Lessons

It is that time of year again – if your child is now in year 2, you should have received an email earlier this week asking whether you would like your child to start music lessons in September. Please make sure you respond by Monday 22nd June if you would like to apply for these.

If your child is currently in years  3-5, you will receive communications within the next few weeks asking whether they want to continue or cancel their music lessons.

Upcoming dates

Date Who
Friday 19th June Year 2 Ukulele Concert: George Hall,14.45- 15.15 (parents invited to attend)
Monday 13th July  Choir & Orchestra Pupils - in year 4/5/6 only  Youth Proms: Symphony Hall, 13.00- 21.15

Here's Mrs Cooper's Duty Bearer poster! As a reminder, Duty Bearers are... individuals who have a particular obligation or responsibility to respect, promote and realise children's rights. With regards to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), all adults who work for the state are duty bearers, such as teachers, the police and social workers.

Our Anti-Bullying Ambassadors have started working on projects linked to Rights Respecting Schools, focusing on Articles 2, 12 and 19.

They are excited to continue their work next half term. Keep an eye out for our upcoming ‘5 Ways to Show Kindness’ week, with activities planned both in classrooms and across the school. They are also about to start the process of creating a 'child-speak' version of the school's Anti-Bullying Policy which, when completed will be added to the website.

Thank you to the parents who have been in touch regarding the arrangements for sports day- as you may have noticed, this year we are trialling a two-part event with Reception and KS1 events in the morning and KS2 in the afternoon. We are doing this due to the comments we had in last summer's survey about parents who found it difficult to watch all events when they had more than one child taking part.

This year, we hope that this is easier, with fewer children and parents and more staff available for each separate event. However we do know that this still may cause issues for working parents who have children in both Rec/ KS1 and KS2.

To try and find a plan that suits the vast majority, we will be popping up some QR codes on Sports Day with a link to a quick 1-2 question survey, about which arrangements you prefer.

FSM Checker

As we approach the end of the school year, now is a great time for our families to check if their child is entitled to the free school meals scheme. We encourage all families to keep us updated on any changes to their circumstances, as eligibility for free school meals can provide valuable support both at home and in school.

If you are unsure whether your child (years 3-6)  is entitled to a free school meal, please speak to one of the office team who can check for you. You will need to bring your national insurance number, full name and date of birth with you.

Alternatively, you can apply from home using this link: FSM Eligibility Checker

Next week we will be on WEEK 2 of the menu.

You can pre-book meals in advance on Arbor till the end of the academic year (Arbor>> Meals>> Meal Choices Available>> Select Meal Choice)

Reminder: Even if your child is a packed Lunch, parents will need to book that lunch option on Arbor!

Themed Menu- 21/05/26

On Thursday 21st May there will be a world cup themed menu. Have a look at the menu below and if this seems like something your child would like to eat, head to Arbor>> Meals to book your child in for a school dinner/ halal school dinner.

Quiz Night

Hello!

There are 3 weeks to go until the PTA Quiz on the 5th June. Doors open at 7pm, dinner at 7.30pm, and then the quiz starts at 8pm.

The night involves roughly 8 quiz rounds (testing all sorts of skills), a sit down bingo, and a tuck shop. It’s always enjoyable - a lovely way to socialise with other families and have a good laugh! The maximum team number is 10 but we’ve also had teams of 3 before. Team spaces are filling up so do submit your forms asap, you can always add to it later. Tickets are available on Arbor. It is £12pp including a fish and chip supper. BYOB.

School Shop

On the last day of term (22nd May) the school shop will be open, weather dependent. It will look slightly different as the wonderful Year 6 playleaders are fundraising for some new lunchtime playground equipment. They will be selling ice creams, crisps, sweets, lemonade, and bracelets. They will also be running games of Simon Says and penalty shoot outs. Please come along and support them.

Volunteer needed

As with previous years, we will be recording the Year 6 production.

We have a parent that has all the kit to record the production, but not the software to edit and master the recording. If there is a member of the BVPS family that can help in this area (your child doesn’t need to be in Year 6) then we would love to hear from you! We will pass on the recordings (audio and visual) for you to work on, with final approval from Mrs Cooper. Fingers crossed we have someone in the community that can help.

Send an email to: pta@bournvillevillageprimary.org.uk or text Becki on 07964166963 if you are keen and able to get involved.

Dates for your diary next term:

And finally...

We hope you have a good weekend, that you have a moment to put your feet up at some point and that the sun shines. Looking forward to seeing you again on Monday morning for the last week of the half term.

Take care all.

Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children is the responsibility of everyone in our school and at all times we consider what is in our children’s best interests. We work to ensure our children are safe and cared for and by doing this we are protecting their health and development and preventing them from harm. If we are worried, we will raise concerns, share information, and take prompt action with the aim of ensuring families receive the right help at the right time.
