Welcome to your newsletter for week ending May 1st
The end of the week and the start of a long weekend (for some of you!). We've had lots going on in school over the last few days including more sports events, the 'Rainforest Man' in for Year 5, another 'Adopt-a-Chef' session for Year 3, Dyslexia training for all teachers and TAs and our Values Assembly today where we focused on children showing courage and determination to challenge themselves.
This week Governors and school leaders discussed a range of topics including how we are doing with our School Development Plan, where we see ourselves within the Ofsted Inspection Framework, the draft Anti-Racism Charter and the progress we are making with our Personal Development Curriculum overview.
This last topic has been an ongoing focus for SLT and we are on track to 'launch' this with children and families in September. Key considerations for this curriculum are that we have a clear set of expectations in terms of the opportunities and experiences that ALL children will have in school. By allocating activities to particular year groups is one way that we will ensure all children get to benefit from all the experiences, rather than selections of children. Included in the plans for this 'curriculum' are the introduction of BVP 'families' where children will be organised into family groups that contain children from across the school and each half term there will be a specified activity for each 'family' to do together. Look out for more information about this and the Personal Development Curriculum as we head towards the Summer break.

'Rainforest Man' Visit
Year 5 thoroughly enjoyed a visit from Dave Shaw, “The Rainforest Man,” on Monday. The children had the exciting opportunity to handle a variety of creatures from the Amazon rainforest and learn more about their habitats. They also took part in making tribal jewellery and creating detailed observational drawings of insects. It was a hands-on, engaging experience and everyone had a fantastic time.
Partnership with Bourn View Care Home
Last Friday, some children from BVP had a lovely walk in the sunshine to Bourn View Care Home to spend some time with the residents. It was fascinating to hear their conversations across the generational divide! Then, on Monday, we welcomed the residents back to BVP for a garden party with some games and colouring celebrating the history and heritage of Bournville.
Y4 trip to Birmingham Buddhist Vihara
On Monday, Y4 made the short coach journey to Dhamma Talaka Peace Pagoda, also known as Birmingham Buddhist Vihara. We were grateful to be welcomed inside and shown around this beautiful building by our hosts. The children listened respectfully in the peaceful atmosphere of the Vihara as they learned more about the philosophy of Buddhism.
Recent Sporting Successes!
Year 5/6 Tag Rugby Tournament - Champions!
Our Year 5/6 boys represented the school brilliantly at the recent Tag Rugby tournament, showing fantastic teamwork, communication and determination throughout the evening. The children worked hard to support one another, making quick decisions in attack and staying organised in defence.
Match after match, the boys grew in confidence and showed great resilience when games became challenging. Their positive attitudes and strong team spirit paid off as they progressed through the rounds and were ultimately crowned tournament winners - a fantastic achievement that reflects their hard work and commitment.
We are extremely proud of the way the team supported each other and demonstrated excellent sportsmanship throughout the competition. Well done, boys!
Year 5/6 Boys Football - 9-a-Side Victory Into the Semi-Finals
Our Year 5/6 boys continued their strong run of form in a recent 9-a-side football match, delivering a confident and well-organised performance. The team showed great understanding of their positions, worked hard for one another, and used their passing skills effectively to move the ball around the pitch.
The boys displayed real determination and resilience, staying focused throughout the match and supporting each other both in attack and defence. Their teamwork and effort led to a well-earned victory, meaning they now progress into the semi-finals - an exciting achievement for the team.
We look forward to seeing how they get on in the next round and wish them the very best of luck!
Girls Netball against Cotteridge
The Girls' Netball team did brilliantly when they played away against Cotteridge this week. The home team were very well drilled but despite loosing on the night our BVP team showed great sporting attitudes, determination to keep going and a positive frame of mind when thinking ahead to their next match. Well done girls- we are all incredibly proud of you and we know you will go from strength to strength!
Year 5/6 Boys Football - 7-a-Side Tournament 3rd Place Finish
The Year 5/6 football team also took part in a competitive 7-a-side tournament, where they showed great perseverance and teamwork against strong opposition. The children demonstrated excellent effort in every match, learning to adapt their play and support each other in different situations.
Throughout the tournament, the team remained positive and determined, showing resilience even in closely contested games. Their hard work was rewarded with an impressive 3rd place finish, which is a fantastic result and reflects the effort and enthusiasm they showed throughout the day.
Well done to all of the players for representing the school so proudly and showing such great team spirit.
Headlice In School
A reminder, if you notice headlice in your child's hair, please treat as soon as possible and inform the school office and class teachers so we can promptly send a reminder to families.
It is only with regular checks and persistent grooming that we can help to contain this ever-increasing problem.
Visit from Beacon
We understand that for some children, coming to school can feel overwhelming. This may be due to worries about friendships, learning pressures, changes in routine, or other anxieties. At BVP , we want to work closely with families to support every child in feeling safe, confident, and ready to learn.
Last week, Joe from Beacon School Support visited school to run a parent workshop, ‘How to help your child when they don’t want to go to school.' Joe shared a range of practical strategies to help children manage worries, build confidence, and feel more positive about coming to school.
If you were unable to join but would like to view the resources and information shared, please head over to our website by clicking this link.
As always, we’re here if you need us so please don’t hesitate to get in contact pastoral@bournvillevillageprimary.org.uk or call the main office. Alternatively, it would be lovely to see you at one of our Pastoral Drop-ins, details below.

Yr4 After School Maths Workshop (18/05/26)
A heads up that we would like to invite Y4 parents and children to attend an afterschool workshop to discuss the Multiplication Tables Check (MTC). The workshop will be on Monday 18th May from 3:30-4:30. It will be a practical, hands-on session where you can logon to the official MTC practice website, as well as play some games on TT Rock Stars.
Each week in assemblies, Mr King and Mrs Cooper have a focus on Children's Rights. Through discussing what's in the news and topics from around the world, we are helping our children learn about the articles and what they mean for them and children across the globe.
You can see the resources we use by going to our Assembly pages on the website here. There are some thought-provoking questions and discussion points you may want to have a think about at home. We will also be popping the Picture News Summary for the week in our newsletters (see below).
Several responses to the Spring Survey mentioned the number of opportunities we provide in school for you to come along to see your children 'in action'. There was a common theme around there being too many of these and that it puts some of you under pressure to attend and that your children are upset if you aren't able to come.
As we begin to think ahead to planning events for next year, we will bear this in mind. We want to keep as many opportunities in place as possible but also don't want this to become tricky for you as families- if you have any thoughts (or suggestions!) on this topic, please let Mrs Cooper know via head@bournvillevillageprimary.org.uk
Next week we will be on WEEK 3 of the menu.
You can pre-book meals in advance on Arbor till the end of the academic year (Arbor>> Meals>> Meal Choices Available>> Select Meal Choice)
Reminder: Even if your child is a packed Lunch, parents will need to book that lunch option on Arbor!
EMMPOWER Dance Club
We still have spaces available for EMMPOWER Dance club on Mondays afterschool (15:30-16:30). For more information, please read the poster below.
And finally...
Thankyou to all the families who responded to the question about the weight of the school's 50th anniversary cake, which we learnt about through one of the HT's log books. The interest this sparked was great and so where appropriate (and when time allows!) we will add a page or two for you to read and enjoy! This week's describes the opening of the school.. and the comings and goings of one of the teachers, poor Miss Pountney!
Take care over the weekend folks, love to all and see you on Tuesday.
Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children is the responsibility of everyone in our school and at all times we consider what is in our children’s best interests. We work to ensure our children are safe and cared for and by doing this we are protecting their health and development and preventing them from harm. If we are worried, we will raise concerns, share information, and take prompt action with the aim of ensuring families receive the right help at the right time.
