Welcome to your newsletter for week ending March 27th
We've had such a busy week at school! On Monday, members of the Orchestra performed brilliantly at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire which saw ensembles from across Birmingham play a range of instruments. Our children played brilliantly, and their conduct was impeccable. Well done Orchestra and Mr Ali!
We've had our Easter Services in school and Year 1 have also been over to St.Francis for their 'Places of Worship' visit. Year 2 headed out to The Think Tank on Wednesday and then on Thursday we had our Easter Bonnet Parade (luckily without hail or snow!) And then today we finished with Values Champions and our Celebrating Our Cultures Day featuring some excellent drama work from Year 6 and a fantastic Bhangra dance from Year 4 on the playground.
It was brilliant to see children in clothes and costumes which celebrated their heritage and cultures- it really did remind what a wonderfully diverse school we have. Thankyou also to the families who supported the day by preparing food to share at the end of the day- we know this is a big 'ask' - we really appreciate your efforts.
Happy Retirement!
Mrs Pugh retires today after 26(!) years working at the then Junior School and more recently, BVP as we know it now. On Thursday we held a special surprise assembly for Mrs Pugh, who was joined by family and friends to celebrate and mark the very special occasion. Tina, thank you for all you have done for our children, families and staff over the years- we wish you a long and happy retirement!
Healthy Snacks at Breaktime
A reminder that we encourage children to eat a fruit or vegetable based snack (or a healthy alternative of appropriate size) at morning breaktimes. We will talk to children if we think snacks are not in line with this request, however, if your child has a particular dietary requirement or sensitivity, please let us know so we can work together to meet all needs.

SAMPAD Workshops... and Rights Respecting Schools!
Today brought our month of working with SAMPAD to a close. It has been wonderful to see the work of Year 4,5, and 6 developing over the weeks. Year 5's art work will be installed over the holiday which will leave a lasting legacy of the of the work the children have completed around three key articles of the UN Convention on the Rights of a Child.
Article 23- A child with a disability has the right to lead a full and dignified life.
Article 28- Every child has the right to an education.
Article 29- Education must develop every child's personality, talents and abilities to the full.
Music spaces available!
If your child is interested in learning the violin or a woodwind instrument, we have a number of music spaces available.
For more information or to express your interest, please contact our Music Lead by emailing [email protected].
Anger is a normal and healthy emotion that all children experience. It often arises when a child feels frustrated, overwhelmed, misunderstood, or treated unfairly. While anger itself is not a problem, how it is expressed and managed is something children need support to learn.
Children may show anger in different ways, through outbursts, withdrawal, refusal, or difficulty with transitions. These behaviours are often a signal that they are struggling to regulate their emotions.
At school, we support children by teaching them to recognise their emotions, use calming strategies, feel safe when they need help and supporting the development of their emotional awareness.
This week some of our Nurture Group children have been thinking about anger like a Volcano. Most of the time things seem calm on the outside but underneath, feelings can begin to build. If these feelings are not noticed or expressed, the pressure grows. Eventually, the volcano may erupt, this can look like shouting, hitting, crying, refusal, or becoming overwhelmed.
We can support children by helping them manage their feelings before they reach eruption point
- Staying calm and modelling positive ways to manage strong feelings
- Notice early signs such as changes in behaviour or mood
- Naming the feeling and acknowledging their emotions ‘I can see you’re feeling upset’
- Teaching simple strategies such as deep breathing, taking a break, or using words to express feelings
- Encourage small releases , talking, movement, or quiet time
- Teach calming strategies , such as deep breathing or taking a break
- Keep routines consistent and have clear expectations – this helps children feel safe and secure
After a child has calmed, it is helpful to talk things through and explore what they could do differently next time.
By working together, we can help children understand their ‘volcano,’ recognise when it is starting to rumble, and develop the skills to manage their feelings in a positive and safe way.
Sharing stories with children is a great way to engage children and develop their understanding in fun and relatable ways. Below are a selection that we have used with children throughout school
If you would like further support or advice, please don’t hesitate to contact the pastoral team [email protected], contact the school office, or pop along to one of our Pastoral Drop in sessions for Parents and carers every Monday 3.30pm-4.30pm in the George Building.
There is also some useful information and advice on our pastoral webpage https://www.bournvillevillageprimary.org.uk/page/detail/our-pastoral-team
Thankyou to those who have completed the Spring Parent / Carer survey already- we're at nearly 100 responses - another 100 would be in line with our usual numbers; this helps us to make comparisons with previous surveys as well as seeing what we're doing well with and what needs improving. Thankyou also to those who left their name at the end of the survey- Mrs Cooper will be in touch over the Easter break.
Some of you have said that you feel that their are too many events during the day that you are invited too, which puts pressure on you as families. Some of you have said you want more reminders about events and some have said you get too many emails. We are always trying to find the right balance for families and will look into how we can improve comms with some kind of opt-out function on Arbor. Re the events in school, we will look again to see if we can get the balance right for the majority of families.
If you haven't responded to the survey, please do so here, and finally, please please pop your name at the bottom of the survey if you would like to talk to Mrs Cooper or a member of SLT- discussion make it much easier to work towards resolutions.
After half term we will be on WEEK 3 of the menu.
You can pre-book meals in advance on Arbor till the end of the academic year (Arbor>> Meals>> Meal Choices Available>> Select Meal Choice)
Reminder: Even if your child is a packed Lunch, parents will need to book that lunch option on Arbor!

Take care- and don't forget to put the clocks forward on Saturday!
Wishing you all a happy and peaceful Easter.
Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children is the responsibility of everyone in our school and at all times we consider what is in our children’s best interests. We work to ensure our children are safe and cared for and by doing this we are protecting their health and development and preventing them from harm. If we are worried, we will raise concerns, share information, and take prompt action with the aim of ensuring families receive the right help at the right time.
