Welcome to our Weekly Newsletter- October 20th

Good afternoon all. We hope you haven't been too adversely affected by the heavy rain today- we know walking to school proved difficult for some, so thankyou for persevering! The rain didn't dampen our Values Assemblies, which is always a great way to end the week... read on for children who have been awarded certificates for demonstrating RESPECT.

Today is Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) Awareness Day- please see below for a short video combining a poem, cartoons and animations. It expresses, from the view of a child, what it is like to have DLD, which affects approximately two children in every classroom.

Next week will be busy- parents' evenings on Wednesday and Thursday and then on Friday we are finishing off with a fundraising event organised by our Year 6 ECO team who are wanting to raise money so that each year group can adopt an animal from the endangered species category. Please do come along to the George Hall (cash only) after school and support the girls and their worthy cause.

Year 6 Football Match

The Year 6 football team started off their season with an inspired performance against West Heath Primary School, winning on penalties.

The first half started with Bournville going 2-0 down, but our fighting spirit managed to pull a goal back. Going into the second half (losing) enthused the team to push on, getting 3 goals going 4-2 ahead. However, West Heath weren’t giving up and managed to get 2 goals just before the final whistle, leaving the game tied at 4-4. Penalties didn’t start well for Bournville, missing the first one. Luckily for us, our keeper managed to save the second one, bringing it back level. After 5 penalties each, it went to sudden death. West Heath stepped up, but our keeper was up to the task of saving it. While he saved the penalty, Bournville still had to score. Bournville could feel it was their moment, and the keeper's hands couldn’t stop the ball going past him, making it a win for Bournville.

We are so proud of the boys, who represented the school showing all our values.

Message from Katie Walker- Bailey-... Our Attendance Ambassador!

TO SEND OR NOT TO SEND?

Sometimes a child will wake up in the morning saying that they feel unwell. Whilst we do encourage children to come to school even if they ‘feel a little unwell’ we do not want any child who is genuinely ill to come to school. Always try and send your child to school if they are a little ‘under the weather’, for example, with a runny nose, headache, tummy-ache. The school will always contact you if your child is unwell, which is why it is vitally important that we have your correct contact details.

HOWEVER, please do not send your child to school if they have any infectious illnesses like Chicken Pox, Measles etc. If your child has been vomiting or is suffering from diarrhoea, then they must stay away from school for 48 hours from the last bout of illness. This is to ensure that any infection does not spread through the school.

A Message from our Year 6 Journalists

In Year 6, we have been learning about Thilafushi, in the Maldives, also known as Trash Island. Year 6 have found out that this giant landfill is damaging our oceans. The Maldives is a popular tourist destination; therefore, over the years, the amount of rubbish has increased, but only 5% of this is recycled. This means that it spills into oceans and is ingested by animals. Due to the sea levels rising, the Maldives is gradually sinking and the toxic waste is leaking from the island and into the ocean - where it is ingested by animals.

We were pleased to read that the Maldives are now working hard to create a system to manage the waste, as well as building a Waste Management Facility by 2024! The picture on the left shows what this is planned to look like.

Lost and Found

We have had a few items handed into the school office;

A keyring

A lanyard

A pair of glasses

If you or someone you know has lost any of the items above, please pop by the school office as it could be yours!

We have also had a parent call about a mermaid doll they found in the playground.

Please can you email [email protected] if you think this could be your child's doll, with a description so we can make sure it goes home to the right family.

Lost Property

Well folks, we're only half a term into the school year and already our lost property boxes are overflowing. We have around 60 jumpers/fleeces/ cardigans that we cannot get back to their owners because there aren't any names written/ stuck/ sewn into them. Please, please, add names and please check names are still visible after washing! Thankyou

23rd November Evening Parent house Party (20:00-23:00)

We are still working on the detail of this - but much like any family, we know the importance of "making a House a Home" - and by converting a suitable space at school to allow for groups of parents to socialise and meet up in a safe space is an important element of being part of the community. Think 'a welcoming House Party/Kitchen Disco with BYOB and snacks (to help keep costs down) somewhere within walking distance of your house (so you don't need a taxi) where you are guaranteed a table (because we have loads) and control of the music (as demonstrated when we open the school shop)'! That's what we mean by Parent House Party - so to dispel any rumours - this is NOT an event at someone's house!

We know that it's close to the Quiz Night, and close to the Christmas Fair, and a potentially expensive time of year, and we know that you might need to take turns in coming along to avoid the cost of baby sitter/childminder. So, if we do this, we will put it on ParentPay, at only £0.10 per person, only so we have an idea of numbers. It'll be open to parent/carers/grandparents of children at the school. Ex-parents are also welcome if anyone is still in contact with them - because we know that when you leave the school (alongside your child) you miss the community that comes with it.

Christmas Cards

We are currently processing the order, but don't worry, we are still accepting last minute orders on ParentPay until Monday/Tuesday next week. Please return the form to the school office if the name is different to the one on your sample.

Christmas Fair Preparations- 2md December (11:00-15:00)

We are opening up the George Hall again this year for the designer/maker community amongst the BVPS family. If you, or your child, is keen on making craft items to sell at the Christmas Fair then you can go ahead and request a table here and we will contact you to make arrangements.

We are concentrating on designer maker craft items / physical items - rather than food or drink. However, if you are a keen baker and wish to help us stock and sell food and drink items in the cafe, then please contact us on [email protected] and we can see what we can do.

We are also seeking donations from the parent community for raffle prizes to be part of the Christmas Raffle. We had a hugely successful response to the previous raffle donation request and we are looking to match this amazing generosity for 2023. Tickets are now on ParentPay and we have published the prize list - which we will add to as the donations come in - see https://bournvillehsa.wordpress.com/end-of-term-raffle-december-2023/ for the list.

Year 6 Opportunites

We will soon be writing to all Year 6 pupils and parents asking for their support to join the Christmas Fair Event Team and run various activities around the fair. This is a great opportunity to get involved in running a smooth event for younger year groups, and sets the scene nicely for funds to be raised for the Year 6 Leavers Celebrations in June/July 2024.

Please put aside one or both shift slots of 10:30-13:00 and/or 12:30 - 15:00 and if you can make yourself available to assist the team as well - even better! More information to follow.

See what our young mathematicians have been up to...

This week, the Reception children have been displaying their creativity and curiosity for maths by representing numbers using an array of tools and materials, including counters, natural objects, numicon, and various maths equipment. They are starting to make links between numbers and their representations in the real world as they take their first steps into becoming mathematicians. Well done Reception, keep up the good work! Which year group will we look at next? If you want to persuade Mr Hall to come and have a look at your fabulous maths skills, speak to him at school and your work could be featured in a future newsletter!

Hello budding scientists!

Today, I wanted to say that not all scientists wear a lab coat. Another inspiring scientist is Adam Jafarr. I know lots of you love to use construction materials such K’nex and Lego. This love of building could become a full time career!
