Welcome to your newsletter for week ending May 3rd

Well we saw a bit of sunshine to welcome in May but it seems to have quickly disappeared! Nevertheless, we've had a good week with lots going on ... including lots of planning for future events, initiatives and school improvements! Today, interested parents met for this half term's Parent Voice meeting and gave feedback on our plans to give you more opportunities to support your children at school (read on for more info).

Mrs May (our SENDCo) has been getting to know your children (and many families too) and further down the newsletter she has given a comprehensive description of what happens at a Pupil Review Meeting.

The Pastoral team have some very exciting news about two new (furry!) additions to their team... again, read on to find out who this is going to be!

As we move towards what is often the busiest time in a primary school year, please keep an eye on the calendar on the website (go to Families- Calendar) or click the link here.

Finally (for this bit!) we already have an enormous amount of lost property this term including lots of coats. Please label all clothing including coats so we can make sure lost items find their way back to you- thankyou.

Walk your wheels

Well done to anyone who rides or scoots to school- we love it that you are being so active! Just a gentle reminder to dismount and walk when you get to the playground- this really helps us to keep everyone safe and reduce the chance of any accidents. Thank you for your support.

Year 5 Boys' District Rugby!

On Saturday 27th, these four boys as part of Bournville RFC U10s played in the finals of the Leicester Tigers Cup.  The team played two games against strong opposition - Oadby Wiggs RFC and Lincoln RFC.  A superb team performance saw Bournville come out victorious in both matches including being unbeaten in the qualifying stages in Stoke too.  They definitely did themselves, their families and Bournville RFC proud!

Year 6 Girls' Netball

A huge well done to our wonderful Year 6 netballers this week who put in a magnificent performance against St Laurence this week.  It was only their second competitive game as a group and although we didn't get a victory, the 4-2 score line was a fantastic result, considering this is a relative new team.  Excellent team spirit was on show and of course plenty of our school values. A super effort. Very well done girls. We are really proud of you!

BVP Eco Group

Today, Friday 3rd May, we (your Eco Group) went to Rowheath Pavilion to meet with a bird specialist and the environmental representative from Mondelez (the company who own Cadbury's).

We were taught how to recognise different birds by their calls and their appearances. We also learnt a technique which makes the sounds you can hear, three times louder than how you would normally hear it. To do this, you use your hands to push your ears forward and face the direction in which the sound is coming from. This makes it easier to hear the birds calling to each other. We hope that you can try this at home or in areas local to you.

We all really enjoyed our experience and had lots of fun together.

ECO Tips

Here are this week's three tips from the ECO committee...

1. take shorter and cooler showers - 4 minutes maximum!

2. donate second hand uniform to the PTA

3. try to be vegetarian one day a week

Own Clothes Day- May 17th

We need your help!

On Friday 17th May children will be able to wear their own clothes to school for a voluntary contribution of 50p.  The money collected will go towards expanding the pastoral team to include two guinea pigs, their housing and food!

Keep an eye out for the name suggestion boxes that will be popping up around school!

SEND Pupil Profile Reviews at BVP

Who has a SEND review meeting?
We currently have 65 pupils in school on our SEND register, of which 50 have a Pupil Profile (sometimes known as an IEP or learning plan) requiring review three times a year.  To enable us to release teachers from class to meet with parent/carers  we have split the review meetings by year groups, across the summer terms.

When will my child's SEND review be?
SEND pupils with Pupil Profiles in reception/year 4, 5 and 6 will have their meetings this term whilst those in year 1,2 and 3 will have theirs next term.
Year 6 reviews have been prioritised this term to enable us to begin developing relationships with the SENDCos from the secondary schools ready for transition to year 7.

How will the meeting be conducted?
If you have a review due this term, you should have already received your invite to come into school to meet with me and the class teacher.  If you are unable to attend in person or would prefer, a Microsoft Teams invitation to join us virtually can be arranged, do get in touch with us to set this up.
If you are unable to attend, please liaise with the class teacher to share your views before the meeting so we can include your feedback when creating the new Pupil Profile.  All meetings are for half an hour and will include your child for some or all of the time as appropriate.

What will happen during the meeting?
The class teacher will bring the review of the targets from the last term with them along with some of the evidence which has informed their decision.  You will also be asked to contribute to the review.  A discussion will then be held about the new targets, which the class teacher will already have considered in light of your child's progress, assessments and developmental stage.  You will also be asked to contribute to the setting of new targets.
Opinions of all attending will be collated during the meeting regarding what is working well and what needs to be improved.

What will happen after the meeting?
All documents will be shared with parents/carers electronically following the review.  A copy of the Pupil Profile review and the new Pupil Profile will be shared with the relevant staff and the new targets will be worked on weekly in class.
Any actions from the review meeting will be recorded, put into place and monitored by the SENDCo and class teacher.
Any questions or concerns regarding the review or new targets can be followed up by parents to the class teacher or SENDCo via phone or email.

What if my child's review is not until next half term?
The invitations for the reviews next term should be released just before the half term holiday.  We appreciate your patience as we get our new systems up and running.

The best outcomes for a child with additional needs always come from a joint working relationship between school, parents, other services, by working with & including ‘the child’.
IASS

Not so long ago, in a school not so far away…

It is a period of maths.

Rebel children, striking from the back of the classroom, have won their first victory against the teachers of BVPS.

During the battle, student spies managed to steal secret plans to the teachers’ ultimate weapon, HOMEWORK, a wicked torture device with enough power to destroy an entire Sunday afternoon.

Pursued by the teachers’ sinister agents, the children race home aboard their bikes and scooters, custodians of the stolen questions that can save their weekends and restore freedom to Bournville....!

Can you aid them in solving the maths challenge below?

Can you step through an index card?

Impossible I hear you say … but with some clever cutting you can keep the paper connected but make it stretch out enough to step through. The surface area of the card stays the same, it just gets redistributed.

You will need:

  • Index cards or paper cut to the size of an index card
  • Scissors

Instructions:

1. Fold the card/paper in half.

2. Cut down the folded edge.

3. Cut up the opposite end between the cuts you already have.

4. Very carefully cut through the centre folded edges, do not cut the outer edge at each end.

5. Open up and step through your index card!

Investigate:

  • What’s the smallest piece of paper you can cut and still step through?
  • What happens if you make the cuts closer together?

Congratulations to S In 5HPS who played the piano beautifully in our celebration assembly today. It is wonderful that we have so many children who wish to share their musical talents with us. Thank you S for doing so, we are really proud of you.

School Choir - Choir practice as normal on  May 13th

We’d like to confirm that choir is on as normal on Monday 13th May. Year 6 we understand if you'd rather miss this one!

Big Book Giveaway

The Big Book Giveaway was hugely successful last Friday - so much so that we have clearly got untapped supply and demand for doing it again!

So, if you have children books (all ages) that you think would be better off in the hands of other kids please sort through, box or bag up securely, mark it up as "PTA Big Book Giveaway" and send it in to School. Once we have got enough stock we will put them out again alongside opening the Shop.

If you need plenty of warning to slot the Quiz Night in your family calendars, and secure appropriate childcare, then take this as the "9 week advance notice"! Its on 5th July. Teams of max 10 with only 120 tickets available. We usually sell out so get your teams sorted by filling in the form here https://bournvillehsa.wordpress.com/quiz-july-2024

PTA Opportunities

For Year 6 Parents - we are now turning our attention to building momentum around the Leavers Celebrations. If you are keen to influence the plans and get involved please do text 07974331102 or start talking to others in the playground and I'm sure they will know how to get you involved.

Here are all the current planned dates for the rest of the Spring and Summer Terms, and we will pop in some School Shop flash sales as well, so look out for messages from School.

You said...you would like to be more involved in school life, especially to be able to 'stay and learn' with your children.

So we have...planned a whole series of opportunities for parents/ wider family members and other important adults in our children's lives, to come in to school to join in with learning opportunities.

These, along with other events such as our 'Welcome Back and Meet the Teacher' meetings in September, subject specific sessions and Parent Voice meetings will be added to our website calendar as soon as possible this term.

(Thankyou to the folks who completed the survey we distributed a couple of weeks ago and our Parent Voice group for helping us plan in events that reflect families' wishes.

And finally...

Thankyou for all the feedback you give us... we're confident we are getting some things right and that other things are improving. If things aren't right for your children or your families though, please make sure you let us know. We're determined to that our school provides the very best educational experience for our children and we know that by working together with parents and carers, we have a much greater chance of getting this right. Don't ever hesitate to get in touch via [email protected]

Have a good weekend all and we'll see you on Tuesday.

Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children is the responsibility of everyone in our school and at all times we consider what is in our children’s best interests. We work to ensure our children our safe and cared for and by doing this we are protecting their health and development and preventing them from harm. If we are worried, we will raise concerns, share information, and take prompt action with the aim of ensuring families receive the right help at the right time.
